Wet weather affects local cricket
DAY two of round five cricket action in the Warrnambool Moyne District Cricket Association premier competition saw games hampered by wet weather.
At Wenborn Oval, Dennington, chasing Nestles’ score of 202, were 4/102 when play was abandoned.
Dilip Tharaka scored 43 from 57 balls for the Dogs, while Pishan Hewage was unbeaten on 20 when play was stopped.
At the DC Farran Oval, West Warrnambool successfully chased Mortlake’s total of 198.
Vice-captain Ben Threlfall was unbeaten on 89 from 136 balls in the Panthers score of 5/237.
Captain Joe Nyikos made 51 from 127 balls in the five wicket win.
At Henderson Oval, no play was possible on day two with North Warrnambool due to start at 2/90 chasing the Northern Raiders score of 191.
At the Terang Turf, Russells Creek scored an 86 run win over the Noorat Terang Lions.
The Lions started the day at 2/16 in pursuit of Creek’s 8/269 declared.
Despite 78 from 134 balls to coach Liam Geary, the Lions were dismissed for 183.
Jacob Eldridge was the pick of the Russells Creek bowlers with 4/23 from 15 overs.
Creek had a second innings and were 5/53 when stumps were called.
At Jones Oval, no play was possible on day two with Warrnambool set to resume on 2/34 chasing Merrivale’s 102.
At Uebergang Oval, Allansford-Panmure scored a thrilling nine run win over Port Fairy.
Chasing 260, the Pirates put up a strong challenge, being dismissed for 251 in the 80th over.
Captain Murray Staude top scored with 70 from 116 balls, with Joe Kenna taking four wickets for the Gators.
This week sees another round of two days matches begin, with Mortlake hosting Port Fairy at the DC Farran Oval, Dennington meeting Noorat Terang at the Walter Oval, the Northern Raiders and Warrnambool will cash at Henderson Oval, and Nestles plays North Warrnambool at the Reid Oval.
West Warrnambool will host Russells Creek at Davidson Oval while Merrivale play Allansford-Panmure at Jones Oval.
In round four of the women’s competition, Nestles had a 121 run win over Wangoom at Wangoom.
Rachel Sabo scored 47 from 37 balls in Nestles’ total of 5/197.
Wangoom could only manage 8/76 in reply, with Sabo and Gabby Lenehan taking two wickets each for Nestles.
At the Mack Oval, Russells Creek scored a four run win over Dennington, 4/84 v 6/80.
Captain Brooke Herbertson top scored with an unbeaten 36 for Russells Creek, with Annabel Wenn making 39 not out for Dennington.
Hawkesdale had an eight wicket win over Koroit at Koroit.
Tara Elliott took three wickets in Koroit’s total of 9/54, with Scarlett O’Donnell making 35 not out in the visitors’ successful run chase.
Allansford-Panmure had a big win over Mortlake at Mortlake.
The home team batted first and were dismissed for 58, with Kiara Dean taking three wickets.
The Gators replied with 3/135 led by 62 to Isabelle Kelly and 47 not out to Grace Farrer.
Warrnambool scored a 51 run win over North Warrnambool at Brierly number two oval.
Hannah Neal top scored with 43 in Warrnambool’s total of 3/134.
Despite 49 to opener Charlotte Wythe, North Warrnambool could only manage 7/83 in reply, with Nara Rohan taking three wickets for Warrnambool.

In this Sunday’s matches, Hawkesdale host Wangoom, Koroit are at home to Allansford-Panmure, Dennington play Warrnambool at Dennington, North Warrnambool and Mortlake meet at Bushfield, Nestles play Cobden at the Reid Oval while Russells Creek has the bye.
