Super Smash Sunday returns
THE always-popular ‘Super Smash Sunday’ will return later this month, with some of the district’s best cricketers set to compete for the $3,000 in prize money.

While scheduling constraints saw last year’s event not held, the return in 2025 will no doubt see renewed enthusiasm and interest from clubs and spectators.
The original Purnim Cricket Club ‘Double Wicket Championship’ was established in 1976 and ran for 32 years until 2007.
During that period there were four players most successful with their respective partners, taking out three titles each – Kevin Leske, David ‘Mouse’ McLean, Peter McDonald and Brandt Walther.
This event was re-established and re-branded as ‘Super Smash Sunday’ in the 2022/23 season.
Mortlake pair Todd Lamont and Lachie Wareham took out the inaugural title.
In 2023/24 Russells Creek team-mates Craig Britain and Hamesh Huffadine were the victors.
Entries are now open for the 2025 ‘Super Smash.’
Entries are limited to 16, two-person teams, and spots are filling fast with competitors from as far afield as Geelong, Bendigo, Maryborough and from within the Warrnambool Moyne association already registering.
Interest has also been shown from Portland and the South West Cricket Association.
Cricketers with overseas backgrounds, as well as local talent, will be showcased vying for the title of Super Smash Champions.
The event is a round-by-round knock out competition until the two grand finalists remain to playoff for the subsequent title.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to see the event return this season after a one-year gap,” Northern Raiders Cricket Club spokesperson Peter McDonald said.
“It’s a full-on, action packed day with the focus on batsmen scoring runs with field place restrictions and reduced size boundaries.
“It’s all about spectator entertainment and fun for the players.”
A fully serviced canteen will run from 8.30am on the day.
Action will get underway on the Rodger Henderson Oval (Purnim Recreation Reserve) from 10am on Sunday, November 23.
This will coincide with under 11 teams playing on the adjoining Peter McDonald Oval from 9am.
